Bulk Tobacco Review #2 -Sutliff Creme Brulee

Sutliff Tobacco is one of the largest pipe tobacco blenders in the game these days. They offer a staggering assortment of choices in both the aromatic and non aromatic fields. Being an aromatic fan, I recently ordered a few samplers of various Sutliff bulk blends from Pipes and Cigars to try out. This one has ended up being one I will definitely put into rotation.

Pipe-  I tried this in both my Missouri Meerschaum Cherry Hardwood and Mr Brog number 21

Sellers Notes-Creme "Brulee is one of Sutliff's most popular aromatics, and trying it just once will show you why. This easy-smoking blend of Virginia, Burley and black Cavendish is accented by the addition of a creamy vanilla, rich caramel and sweet honey-based top note."

Tin/Pouch Note- You most definitely get the smell of a creamy vanilla off of this with just a hint of caramel and perhaps nougat. The smell made my mouth water for some dessert.

Smoke- From the moment you light this up, the flavor hits your palate with a strong warm French vanilla flavor. The tobacco stays lit well with very little need for tamping after the initial light. The flavor lasts the entire bowl and this blend smokes very slowly. It did not smoke wet, which is always nice with aromatics, and the blend gave me no bite or burn.

Room Note- AMAZING. You really do smell an aroma so convincing that you swear someone is in the kitchen baking some delicious treats. One of the most pronounced room notes I have experienced.

Final Analysis- I will certainly be buying this again. It is a great buy at 3 bucks an ounce and is a blend you can smoke pretty much all day if you wanted to. But you may end up going out for treats as it does make you very hungry for some sugary goodness. On a scale of 1 to 10 this is a solid 8 to 9.

Happy Smoking!!!

Bulk Tobacco Review #1- Peter Stokkebye Black Currant Cavendish #45

Hello and welcome to my little corner of gentlemanly vice, that of pipe smoking. I hope you enjoy my first review. These will be short, sweet, and unpretentious.

For my first review I decided to crack open a 1 ounce bad sample I had purchased from Pipes and Cigars online store. Peter Stokkebye is one brand of many sold by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Other lines include the famous Captain Black as well as Lane Limited bulk line. The flavor I chose was their black currant blend. Here is the short and skinny of my experience.

Pipe- Mister Brog No.21, a pear wood pipe.

Sellers Notes- This is apparently a blend of black cavendish, which is a tobacco that can be made from virgina or burley varieties that undergoes a process that turns the tobacco black and gives it a mellow flavor. American makers tend to use burley, while Europeans virginia. They state "Peter Stokkebye No. 45 Black Currant Cavendish consists of bright, sweet Virginias and Stokkebye's fabled black Cavendish. The tantalizing flavor of black currant is added, with a hint of green apple for terrific room note and a smooth and sweet taste."

Tin note.....or in this case a pouch note- You can definitely smell an almost liquor version of the currant. Also some raisin notes and just a hint of vanilla perhaps underneath. I do not pick up the apple at this time.

Smoke- The tobacco lit easily, but took a few tries to keep it going. I had to retamp/pack it more than once. The flavor is pretty on par with the description though. You definitely taste the currant that there is an almost granny smith apple tartness to it. While it does not last the entire bowl, I would say it is present for 80% of the smoke and only slowly fades away. Afterwards you are left with a very mellow natural tasting smoke. The tobacco smoked cool and dry and even though I do tend to smoke fast, I did not incur and tongue bite or burn.

Room Note- Rather pleasant smelling, you do get a mellow hint of the flavors in the air.

Would I buy again? Yes.

My rating on a 1-10 scale puts this at about a 6.5, a solid score since this only runs about $2.20 an ounce at the time of this posting.
